A MEDIEVAL MYSTERY On a remote East Anglian coast stands Tyndal Priory, home to a rare monastic order where men and women live and work together in close proximity. Twenty-year-old Eleanor of Wynethorpe has been appointed prioress by Henry III over the elected choice of the priory itself. Young and inexperienced, Eleanor will face a grave struggle – in a place dedicated to love and peace, she will find little of either.

SANCTITY OF HATE Summer, 1276 Tyndal Priory is peaceful – or was until the corpse of a deceitful and unpopular man is found floating in the millpond. The list of suspects is long, but the villagers of Tyndal are certain they know who the killer is. They demand that a Jew made homeless by King Edward's Statute of the Jewry is hanged for the crime. While the lynch mob gathers, Prioress Eleanor has to ask herself why are they so keen to convict a stranger – a refugee only stopped in the village while his wife gives birth – for the murder of a man none of them could stand?

I've been waiting for this book! I'm hooked on this series! Priscilla Royal has created a series of Medieval Mysteries that are a grand mixture of historical fiction and suspenseful mystery...page turners with excellent writing. In addition she has created a group of characters that are fascinating and multidimensional. When I finished reading Sanctity of Hate I was sorry to reach the end. I wanted to read more about Tyndal Priory in 1275 in England. I wanted to spend more time with Brother Thomas, Crowner Ralf, the young Prioress Eleanor and Sister Anne. The women are strong and clever, and the characters face problems and challenges that are both representative of the time and setting, and yet also timely. Of course the story begins with a murder, and a number of possible suspects. Among the possible suspects are a Jewish family. A sub-text of this work concerns the Jewish people in England before the expulsion. The author's notes at the conclusion give valuable information about this aspect of her work.) Ms. Royal has done her research and weaves it into this latest work with painful realism and accuracy. This book now stands on my bookshelf with her other books, and many works I love by great storytellers such as Judith Rock, Mel Starr, Rory Clements, C. J. Sansom and other gifted writers of English historical fiction.

The Sanctity of Hate Medieval Mystery Book 9 edition by Priscilla Royal Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I love medieval history and novels. This one is very good. It is full of revealing cultural details of medieval life. One I read recently was full of anachronistic intrusions from 20th century sexual politics. The net effect was the same as it would have been if the author had had the people of the 12th century village watching the Super Bowl on television. This one was an unfolding of authentic medieval culture, thought, and religion.
If Priscilla Royal writes it, I will buy it and read it. So superior to much of the Medieval mysteries on the market. Complex, intelligent characters you can't forget.
I had no doubt that "Sanctity of Hate" would be a five star novel, before I even started on the first page. For me, it was anxiously awaited - I have read all the author's previous mysteries in this series. The characters are so well-formed that I have an immediate mental picture of them, and Pioress Eleanor and Brother Thomas are methodical and brilliant in their crime solving.

In addition, the story also brings to life the plight of the Jews in medieval Europe and is dealt with in a sympathetic manner, and also portrays how easily a murderous mob could be incited with blatant lies and hate speech.

A bonus is the hoped for culmination of the romance between two of the regular characters ...
Ms Royal continues this delightful series with a book driven by believable, well developed characters and a satisfying plot. The locale includes a fascinating look into medieval English life. I look forward to the next installment.
I have read Ms. Royal's former books, however, the same themes of friar battling homosexuality and catholic theology does not seem to go anywhere. Themes are the same in every book, which may be some readers cup of tea, there are no real surprises in plot and outcome, however, the ideology of Catholicism at the time is realistic, as are the prejudices. This is not a bad read, just the same as former books, no deviation from earlier books.
I have truly enjoyed the historical aspect of Royal's novels with the mystery component as icing on the cake. However, I found this newest effort to be weak in its main plot and heavy with subplots. In fact, I may have missed the boat entirely in determining just what the focus was. I would like to have seen the Jewish component expanded and felt new character development was short changed. Unlike her previous novels, "The Sanctity of Hate" was too scattered for my liking and I missed the good, bad or indifferent relationships and interactions with the existing characters, there were some but...... I missed them.

disappointed fan
I follow this series religiously, so to speak....

This is a meticulously researched totally, engaging series and the latest entry, "The Sanctity of Hate" does not disappoint.

What makes this series a stand out is the complexity of the characters and an intriguing portrait of life in a woman-led religious order and the flawed monk who serves there under the wise, politically astute and complex Prioress. There are many interesting secondary characters and you really get a full flavor of the times in the author's descriptions of life in 13th Century England. These books are extremely well written.

I strongly recommend you start with the first book in the series, "The Wine of Violence", and read them all in order. I gave copies to some of my lucky friends for Christmas in hopes they will join me on the journey!

Can't wait for the next one!
